Govtechlab Madrid goes global

3 de August de 2023 by Eduardo Santana

As a fundamental part of the lab, we participate in different events abroad to share knowledge and establish relationships with the main agents of the govtech field in the world.

The presence in these events is proving to be key for the positioning of Govtechlab Madrid at an international level. In addition to providing visibility to the lab, it allows us to establish relationships with key players such as other govtech labs, international organisations or digital companies. A valuable opportunity to share experiences, success stories and strengthen links that foster innovation in the public sector.

The focus on identifying and sharing best practices at international level shows that the same solution can be suitable in different municipalities, regions and countries. And that the potential for international scalability is possible. Especially spurred by the reality brought about by the pandemic, governments around the world are accelerating the digitisation and adoption of new technologies to provide more efficient management and better respond to the needs and demands of citizens.

Among the various international events in which we have participated to date, we highlight:

Govtech Connect

We were an active part of the webinar launching the European Community GovTech Connect, an initiative driven by the European Commission to promote govtech ecosystems in Europe. In this online meeting, Lucía Errandonea, coordinator of Govtechlab Madrid, presented the project together with other European labs, such as GovTech Sweden, GovTech Lab Lithuania and GRNET – Greek Research and Technology Network.

Govtech4all – Brussels

The biannual meeting of the Govtech4all consortium, composed of 22 government agencies and companies from 15 EU member states with the aim of strengthening the single market for new govtech innovation models at the service of administrations. Idoia Ortiz, CEO of Gobe, participated on behalf of Govtechlab Madrid to establish contact with govtech actors of the consortium, both from Spain and other European countries, and to present the project, as well as to explore possible collaborations.

Govtech Leaders Conference – Vilnius

We were present at the Govtech Leaders Conference 2023, organised by GovTech Lab Lithuania in Vilnius, one of the most important events in the field of govtech in the region. During the conference we explored the role of govtech in the future of public administration, the capabilities needed for innovation in the public sector and the relationship between startups and the administration.

BID Forum – Colombia

This forum organised by tBanco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) stood out for its relevant govtech content agenda and served as a networking space with strategic actors of the govtech ecosystem. Idoia Ortiz also represented Govtechlab Madrid at the event with the aim of creating alliances in Latin America and raising awareness of our lab.

We will continue to explore new internationalisation opportunities and participate in relevant events with the aim of being a reference in the international community of innovation and technology applied to the public sector.

Govtechlab Madrid, at South Summit 2023

14 de June de 2023 by Eduardo Santana

The eleventh edition of South Summit Madrid was held between 7th and 9th June at La Nave. It is the largest entrepreneurship fair in southern Europe, bringing together startups, investors and large companies, and is supported by the Community of Madrid.

An international event where entrepreneurship, innovation, social impact, talent and investment and growth opportunities were discussed. Govtechlab Madrid had the opportunity to be present at the event thanks to a panel organised by the Fundación para el Conocimiento madri+d on new programmes aimed at strengthening the innovation ecosystem in the Community of Madrid.

The panel attracted a large number of interested people and was moderated by Federico Morán, director of the Foundation. Speakers included Ana Cremades, Director General of Research and Technological Innovation, who highlighted the value of the public-private Clusters of Technological Innovation and Talent (CITT) of the Community of Madrid; Jesús Rojo, Head of the Technology Transfer and European Programmes Area of the Foundation, who spoke about the designation of Madrid by the European Commission as an innovation hub of the continent: European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH); Lucía Errandonea, coordinator of the Govtechlab Madrid project; and Eduardo Díaz, head of the Foundation’s Technology-Based Entrepreneur Area, who reviewed the general state of the startup ecosystem in the region.

Govtechlab Madrid made it clear at South Summit that all participants in the lab have something to gain. While municipalities develop a new vision and new opportunities for the development of innovative projects, startups open up a new market. The aim of Govtechlab Madrid is threefold. On the one hand, to foster the new public-private relationships necessary for the economic development and welfare of the region. On the other hand, to promote a new way of doing and working with the Madrid entrepreneurial ecosystem. Finally, to provide solutions to specific problems of the municipalities by opening up the market of digital providers. This is the only way to access a more open, diverse and competitive offer, resulting in greater well-being for citizens.

Govtechlab Madrid already has its first participating municipalities

11 de June de 2023 by Eduardo Santana

Alcobendas, Carabaña, Fuenlabrada, Torrelodones and Collado Mediano will be the first municipalities to participate in the second edition of the lab.

Govtechlab Madrid, the laboratory that brings innovative solutions from startups, scaleups and digital SMEs to the major challenges facing public administrations in our region, already has the first five municipalities that will participate in this second edition. They are Alcobendas, Carabaña, Fuenlabrada, Torrelodones and Collado Mediano.
‍
Each of these municipalities will have the opportunity to learn about, experiment and implement digital solutions in real environments to facilitate services and demands that affect citizens in their daily lives. In addition, the digital solutions proposed will enable long-term decisions to be made taking into account sustainability criteria.

In this first phase, the teams of the participating city councils will develop dynamics to identify and prioritise specific problems that can be solved with digital solutions. In May, these challenges will be communicated to the community of startups, scaleups, digital SMEs, investors and launchers, and innovative projects will be identified and presented to the municipalities. Later, the projects with the greatest potential will be chosen and one of them will be piloted. At the end, the results will be analysed and disseminated for use by other public administrations and the Madrid and global govtech ecosystem. This whole process of challenge identification, public-private dialogue, piloting and dissemination of results is called open innovation.

Public workers will be trained in govtech methodologies so that they can continue to replicate this type of process in the future.

As a fundamental part of the programme, civil servants will be trained in govtech methodologies so that they can continue to replicate this type of process in the future and startups will be trained in strategy to compete in the public sector.
‍
The aim of this new call is not only to continue strengthening Madrid’s govtech ecosystem, but also to take advantage of these innovative technological solutions from the administration to generate a positive impact on citizens.
